Foreign trade remains one of the key drivers of China's economic growth. In the first three quarters of 2024, China's total imports and exports reached RMB32.33 trillion, up 5.3% year on year. Of which, exports totaled RMB 18.62 trillion, a 6.2% year-on-year increase. (During the same period, China's GDP grew by 4.8% year on year.)

Export Structure Optimization: In the first three quarters, China's electromechanical product exports reached RMB11.03 trillion, up 8%, accounting for 59.3% of total export value. Among these, high-end equipment exports grew by 43.4%, while integrated circuits, automobiles, and other key products rose by 22%, 22.5%, and 15.5% respectively. Additionally, traditional labor-intensive product exports totaled RMB3.13 trillion, increasing by 28%.

According to the latest data released by the General Administration of Customs on December 10, China's integrated circuit exports from January to November this year reached RMB1.03 trillion, surpassing the trillion-yuan mark for the first time, with a year-on-year growth of 20.3%.

Private Enterprises Emerge as the Primary Driver of China's Foreign Trade Growth

In the first three quarters of 2024, China's private enterprises achieved import and export value of RMB17.78 trillion, growing by 9.4%, accounting for 55% of total foreign trade value. Private enterprises' trade with ASEAN, Africa, and Latin America increased by 12%, 6.4%, and 13.9% respectively. Their shares in China's trade with these regions rose to 62%, 61.1%, and 54.2% correspondingly. High-tech product exports by private enterprises grew by 14%, representing 52.7% of China's total high-tech product exports.

In 2023, the number of foreign trade entities with import/export records in China exceeded 600,000 for the first time, of which 556,000 were private enterprises, accounting for 92% of the total.
(According to statistics, as of August 31, 2024, the total number of manufacturing enterprises in China reached 6.03 million)
